8 th March 08-Rodeo trip...diverted to Lake Taupo

This weekend we planned to go to a rodeo about 40 minutes away from where we live off Highway 5. Helen and Jon arrived early, picnic in the car we set off. After travelling for about 45 minutes...we started to wonder if we had missed it.....then an hour passed.....sooooo, turns out the Rodeo wasn't sign posted so we flew straight passed it!

So we ended up travelling to Lake Taupo. We passed through Lake Taupo on our journey to Hawkes Bay back in November, but didn't stop as there was a huge cycling event going on, so it was nice to go back and see the Lake. It took us about 2 hours to get there and when we arrived, we strecthed our legs and had a walk to the tourist information to see what there was to do in the area. We decided that we we're going to travel another 25 minutes north to a place called 'The Hidden Valley...Orakei Korako Cave and Thermal Park'.

We walked back to the car, grabbed our picnic lunch and headed down to the lake to have our lunch. Taupo is a beautiful place, the lake there is the largest fresh water lake in Australasia, and was created by the worlds largest volcanic eruption of the last 5,000 years.Just to give you an idea of the size, the lake is 25 nautical miles in length and 18 miles in width.

It is supposed to be great for Trout fishing....I can feel another fishing rod coming on!!!!!

Lunch by the lake was stunning, after an hour we packed up and headed off to the Hidden Valley....
