Osmanthus Garden - Hastings

Graham on the 'curved friendship bridge'..if you look closely there is a fish with a white eye carved into the stone...this is supposed to stimulate discussion whilst you walk through the gardens....

Mum is this what you did in the 1970's before I came along?????

Osmanthus Garden is a small section of Cornwall Park, it has a mixture of both Chinese and New Zealand cultures. This section of the park was established in 1996 and commemorates the relationship between Hastings and it's sister city Guilin. In the 1970's a scientific researcher D McKenzie noted that there we're great similarities between the cities including horticulture and their urban-rural mix,and so made contact with Hastings Council with a view to becoming sister cities. In 1981, Hastings became the first New Zealand City to make a sister agreement with a chinese city.

The gardens predominantly look chinese...however there are a variety of new zealand plants all around the chinese elements. It was a great place to visit, you can see that so much thought has gone into the designing of it.
