The cave....
Orakei Korako..translated into english means ' The Place of Adorning'. This place was magical. We arrived, walked through the shop/cafe area and boarded a boat across Lake Ohakuri to 'the Hidden Valley'. We laughed when we saw the distance we had to travel on the boat, we probably could have swam it...needless to say we we're on the boat about 3 minutes!!!!
This place has remained almost unchanged for thousands and thousands of years. Throughout the valley there we're wooden walkways leading to mud pools, boiling pools, geysers, a geothermal cave and gorgeous panoramic views of native bush...it was an extremely unique place. The smells we're interesting...we decided a mix between rotten eggs and..at times...smoky bacon crisps!!!!!!.....oooooh.....miss the odd packet of frazzles!!!!!!! This place is known for having the greatest number of active geysers of any geothermal fields in New Zealand.
The walk around was about an hour and a half....the highlight was probably the Ruatapu Cave ( Sacred Hole)...the cave extends 120 foot down to a hot pool at the bottom named 'Waiwhakaata'..the translation of this is 'the pool of mirrors'.
Enjoy the pics......
