Today is a bank holiday for us, namely Waitangi Day. This day is to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between the Crown and the Ngati Kahungunu. The event thaat we attended was in a place called Clive, which is about 20 minutes from where we live. We we're AMAZED at the amount of people there, it was absolutely buzzing with people, there was actually a traffic jam...something we haven't seen since arriving in New Zealand.
There we're lots and lots of stalls with a variety of different foods and also some craft stalls. There was also a large stage where a variety of performances we're to be seen. The crowd we're predominantly Maori...and the atmosphere was quite strange. For such a large event you would think the place would have been 'alive'...but in fact it felt ( to us) quite serious and intimidating at times.
We stayed and watched one performance, which was fantastic. See pics....
